How Long Does an Oil Change Take? Your Guess Is Too Short

An oil change occupies the service bay for 15 to 45 minutes, and the visit around it runs far longer. Take 5 Oil Change says its drive-through service "typically takes just 10 to 15 minutes" and puts the average at other shops at 20 to 45 minutes. J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Customer Service Index Study, built on 51,228 owner responses collected through 2025, clocked the average dealership maintenance visit at 1.61 hours for mass-market brands and 2.46 hours for premium brands, against 62 percent of aftermarket visits finishing inside an hour. A tire rotation adds roughly 10 to 15 minutes. J.D. Power's 2024 study found mass-market owners waiting an average of 5.2 days for the appointment itself and premium owners 5.4 days. Budget half an hour of work, one to two and a half hours away from your day, and about a week of lead time.

The two clocks nobody separates for you

I catalog postmarks for a living. A cancellation is a small exact record: this envelope was struck at this facility on this date. It says nothing about how long the letter sat in a sack before the hammer came down. The stamp records handling, and handling is a moment.

Service bays work the same way. The number on the sign is handling time. The number that governs your afternoon is dwell time, and different people set them. Bay time follows your engine. Dwell time follows the shop's book, its bay count, and the vehicles ahead of you.

When you call, ask two questions and write down two answers. How long is the vehicle actually on the lift or over the pit? And is this a wait or a drop-off? Shops schedule waiters differently, and a service writer who knows you are staying will often slot you into a shorter promise. The 5.2-day and 5.4-day appointment averages are a third clock, running before you leave your driveway, and it is what drivers forget when they decide on Tuesday to have this handled by Wednesday.

What actually determines the length of your service

Start with how much oil your engine holds, which is rarely the number people assume. General Motors publishes a chart titled 2025 Engine Oil Capacities (With Filter) — U.S. and Canada only, dated January 2025, listing every model against its RPO engine code. A few rows from it:

Read the Equinox rows twice. Same engine, same RPO code, and the all-wheel-drive version takes 1.1 quarts more. Read the Silverado 2.7 rows: identical engine, and the truck with a plastic oil pan takes half a quart more than the one with an aluminum pan. The badge on the tailgate will not tell you.

That is why the RPO code is the closest thing a car has to a postmark. A cancellation identifies a facility on a date, which is how I separate two towns that shared a name. An RPO code identifies an engine build, which is how a parts counter separates two trucks that share a nameplate.

Viscosity is the second variable, and the shelf behind the counter changed recently. API opened licensing for API SQ and ILSAC GF-7A and GF-7B on March 31, 2025. The Starburst mark now certifies GF-7A in 0W-20 and heavier grades; the Shield certifies GF-7B, which exists only for SAE 0W-16. Since March 31, 2026, oils meeting the older GF-6B no longer qualify for the Shield. GM's chart alone spans 0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-50 and 15W-40 in one model year. If your grade is out of stock, the visit stops until someone fetches it.

Third is filter design. A spin-on canister comes off in seconds. A cartridge filter sits in a housing behind a plastic cap, often above a bellypan held on by a dozen or more fasteners.

Quick lube versus dealership: what you are actually buying

The strongest argument against my position is the one I have to grant first. The drive-through pit model works. Take 5 quotes 10 to 15 minutes, Valvoline Instant Oil Change advertises an oil and filter change plus an 18-point check in about 15 minutes with no appointment, and J.D. Power's 62 percent figure is owner survey data. For a driver with a common engine, a spin-on filter, and no warranty argument pending, that is the right answer, and sending them to a dealership a week out would be bad advice.

What you trade is scope and depth of record. The pit is a hole in the floor with the wheels still loaded on the deck, efficient for draining and refilling and unsuited to anything needing the wheels raised. The dealership visit runs longer because the vehicle goes on a lift, a technician works the manufacturer's inspection sheet, and open recalls surface against your VIN.

Price tracks the same split. Kelley Blue Book puts a conventional oil change nationally at $35 to $75 and a full synthetic at $65 to $125, filter included, with dealerships near or above the top of that band. AAA's 2026 labor-rate article cites a 2025 PartsTech report finding almost half of shops billing labor between $120 and $159 per hour. That is the arithmetic behind a $100 invoice for thirty minutes of work.

What turns thirty minutes into an afternoon

I have never turned a drain plug for pay, and I cannot tell you how carefully a given technician works. What I can vouch for are the documents, because documents are my trade, and these are unusually blunt.

General Motors issued Bulletin 15-00-90-001 in March 2015, titled Diagnostic Tips for Preventing Oil Leaks After Changing Oil and Filter. Its filter procedure has the technician hand-tighten until the gasket contacts the sealing surface, mark the filter at 3 o'clock, then turn it three quarters of a turn to 12 o'clock with a cup wrench. The bulletin states plainly: "DO NOT tighten the oil filter more than one full turn," and warns that a filter "insufficiently tightened or overtightened may contribute to an oil leak." It closes with photographs of gaskets crushed and split.

WIX Filters arrived at the same place ten years later. Its product update of February 25, 2025 changed the printed instructions on a list of catalog numbers to three quarters to one full turn after gasket contact, and gave the reason: "The subjective 'hand tight' approach to filter installation, which remains prevalent in the field, may result in improper installation."

Two independent documents, a decade apart, landing on the same fraction of a turn. That is the kind of agreement I trust.

Torque figures for the rest of the job are engine-specific and published. Toyota's service manual for the 2GR-FE lists the oil pan drain plug at 40 N·m (408 kgf·cm, 30 ft·lbf). On Toyota's cartridge-filter engines the housing cap is 25 N·m, 18 ft-lb, molded into the plastic where anyone can read it, and the cap's own drain plug is 13 N·m.

Delays come from what happens when a previous visit ignored those numbers. A drain plug torqued past spec into an aluminum pan strips the threads, and the fix is a thread insert or a new pan. A filter cap taken past 25 N·m cracks or seizes. Then the ordinary interruptions: your grade is out of stock, a bellypan fastener rounds off, the inspection finds a weeping valve cover, the service writer calls with a list of filters and wiper blades.

What a tire rotation changes besides the clock

A rotation is the add-on most often booked into the same appointment, and it changes the physical setup of the job.

The torque column is the part worth sitting with. The heaviest fastener in an oil change on a Toyota V6 is a 30 lb-ft drain plug. Lug nuts on a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are specified at 140 lb-ft, roughly four and a half times that, and Toyota specifies 76 lb-ft on a Camry. Wheels also come off, which is why a rotation produces findings an oil change never would: pad thickness, uneven inner-shoulder wear, a weeping strut. Those findings extend the visit more than the rotation does.

Read the paperwork before you drive away

Here my trade and your invoice converge. A cancellation with no legible date is close to worthless to me. I can hold the envelope, admire the strike, and prove nothing with it. A service invoice reading "OIL CHG — LOF" is the same object.

I learned that the expensive way. Several years ago I produced a receipt carrying no viscosity grade and no filter part number, could not establish what had gone into the sump, and paid for a second oil change six weeks after the first. It cost me $89 and a Saturday, and the only thing wrong with the first service was the paperwork.

Before you leave, run this:

  1. Check that the viscosity grade on the invoice matches what your manual specifies for your engine and RPO code.
  2. Check that the quantity in quarts matches your published capacity, and that a filter part number appears.
  3. Check that both the date and the odometer reading are recorded.
  4. Pull the dipstick yourself after the engine sits a few minutes, then look at the ground under the car.
  5. Confirm the oil-life monitor was reset, and photograph the invoice.

The windshield sticker does none of this work. It carries the shop's default interval rather than your manufacturer's schedule, and it lists no viscosity, no quantity, no part number.

When it stops being maintenance and becomes diagnosis

Ford's owner-support material describes the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor as calculating the interval from vehicle use, operating conditions, and time since the last service, showing "Change Engine Oil Soon" at roughly 5 percent remaining life and "Oil Change Required" at zero. Toyota's schedule for modern full-synthetic applications runs 10,000 miles or 12 months under normal conditions and drops to 5,000 miles or 6 months under Special Operating Conditions, which include short trips, extended idling, dusty roads, and towing.

Some signs move the appointment out of the maintenance queue. A red oil-pressure warning means stop the engine now, because on most vehicles that lamp reports pressure rather than level. Milky residue under the oil cap suggests coolant intrusion. Consumption beyond a quart between changes, a metallic sheen in the drained oil, or a top-end tick on cold start are findings a fifteen-minute bay cannot chase. Book those as diagnosis and expect a different clock. J.D. Power's 2025 study, drawn from 55,210 respondents, found 12 percent of repairs were not completed correctly on the first visit.

Until roughly 2022 I told drivers to watch the odometer. I now tell them to watch the calendar first, because every mainstream schedule I have read caps the interval at twelve months regardless of mileage. A car driven 3,000 miles in two years is not on a light schedule. It is overdue. Moisture and oxidation accumulate on the calendar.

The gallon you leave behind, and the file you keep

Each light-duty service on GM's 2025 chart produces between 4.2 and 10 quarts of used oil, roughly one to two and a half gallons. The EPA states that one gallon of used motor oil provides the same 2.5 quarts of lubricating oil as 42 gallons of crude, and that used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water, a year's supply for fifty people. About four million people, the agency notes, reuse used oil or bring it to a recycling facility. A shop handles that disposal; do the work yourself and the volume is yours.

The file you build outlasts any single visit. Twelve invoices carrying dates, odometer readings, viscosity grades, quantities, and filter part numbers form a chronology that survives a warranty argument or a resale negotiation. I reconstruct vanished towns from ledgers kept by clerks who never imagined anyone reading them fifty years on. The ones who wrote down dates left something usable. The ones who wrote "misc." left a gap nobody can close.
